May 2019

This is my first piece as new president and firstly I would like to thank Denise for her time as president, and hope I can follow in her successful footsteps. Also thanks to Deb Whittaker and Wendy Wallington for their time on the committee.

In our first meeting of the WI year we were entertained by Matthew Sproston, who stepped in at short notice to talk about the life of Victoria Wood and to sing some of her lyrically challenging songs with ukulele accompaniment.

This was our first meeting in the main hall with the new heating keeping us warm and, although it was much more sociable sitting round tables and being able to move about more freely, we do have some acoustic issues to overcome.

Our next meeting is on May 13 at 7.30pm when we have a talk on Roman Gardens by Cherry Hubbard and the competition will be “a piece of old pottery”.

The following week is busy as there is a Forest Group meeting on Tuesday 21 May, 7.30pm at Hook Village Hall. A finalist in 2015 in The Great British Sewing Bee, Lt Col Neil Stace will be speaking. I'm sure he will have some interesting tales to tell. The cost is £3 to WI members. On Wednesday 22 May we are visiting TWIGS (Therapeutic Work In Gardens in Swindon) for a garden tour followed by afternoon tea. The cost is £9.50 plus car share costs. On Wednesday 29th May we are running 2 Indian Block Printing Workshops from 10-12noon and 1-3pm. The cost is £15 which includes 2 items to print tea towels, bottle bags or cotton bags, numbers will be limited as we are in the committee room so book early contact Carol or Janet.

Our generous members have been donating various items useful to homeless women in the county. We already have enough warm clothing and toiletries to fill two waterproof bags so I shall be taking them to WI House in Devizes fairly soon.

Visitors are always welcome, if you are interested and don't want to come on your own, we can arrange to bring you to the meeting or meet you on arrival.

June 2019

At May's meeting we were given a talk about Roman gardens by Cherry Hubbard. This very interesting topic encompassed much more than just gardens, including Roman life in Britain, with lots of artefacts displayed which we could handle. The competition, a piece of old pottery was won by Margaret Godfrey.

Our next meeting on Monday 10 June will be held at the home of one of our members, please contact myself or Janet for details if you wish to visit. The talk will be from “Dressability” a Swindon charity who provide a low cost alterations and dressmaking service for people with disabilities who need their clothes to fit well, feel comfortable and remain stylish. I'm sure this will prove a very enlightening topic.

We will have been on our garden tour of TWIGS, and enjoyed an afternoon tea at the Olive Tree Cafe. Also our Forest Group meeting will have taken place, with a talk by the Sewing Soldier from The Great British Sewing Bee. He has a mission to collect 100 quilted squares to be sewn into quilts, ponchos and sleeping bags for homeless veterans.

Visitors are always welcome, if you are interested and don't want to come on your own, we can bring you to the meeting or arrange to meet you on arrival.
